Liturgy of the Word for Children

What is Liturgy of the Word for Children?

Children’s Liturgy is about breaking open the Word of God for young people.  The children are taken to their own sacred space where the Gospel is proclaimed from The Lectionary adapted for Children.  These Readings are written in simple language so children can understand the stories of Jesus.  There is a time for discussion and questions.

The Liturgy of the Word for Children is not “Sunday school”. Rather, it is a component of the ritual prayer of Mass just as it is for adults.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word is not separate from the Mass. It flows with and in the greater celebration of the Sunday Mass.

Although the children may be in a different space for the liturgy of the Word or at a different level of understanding, we do not think of them as having been “dismissed” from the assembly. When they are elsewhere, it is to enhance their inclusion in the liturgy, not separate them from it.

Parents or guardians are always welcome to join us.  There is training available for anyone who would like to be an adult leader in the very special ministry.
